24: How Many Beans Make Five?

When the next day came, however, Eric was already talking about getting back to work by lunchtime. He’d got up that morning feeling much better. He’d showered, dressed and even come downstairs to make his own breakfast after Daisy had gone off to school. Sharon was surprised to find him sitting at the table when she popped through for a coffee.

But it was when she was eating an egg and cress sandwich, that had gone out of date the previous day, that he came into the shop and told her he was going into work the next day.

‘Can’t put it off forever,’ he said.

That meant he’d be returning to work on a Tuesday. Only of course, she couldn’t point that out, even though it sent a chill down her spine.

‘Tomorrow it is then,’ she said brightly, forcing a smile on her face. ‘I’m making a chilli tonight, one of your favourites. Do you think your stomach will be up for that?’

‘Absolutely,’ he replied, ‘I’m looking forward to it already. But what about Daisy?’

‘What about Daisy?’

‘Her being vegetarian.’

‘Oh, that. I’ll make her some eggs on toast, she’ll be fine.’ He looked to be on the verge of saying something else on the subject but then said,

These beans were no exception, caught by Daisy while she was restocking on Saturday. Most people used canned nowadays and Sharon had already decided she wouldn’t bother restocking with the dried variety again. But that was what had given her the idea to make one of Eric’s favourite dinners because at the time she was feeling good about the fact he was right where she could see him.

She was regretting it now.

Since his decision to go back to work the next day, she felt considerably less affection towards him and didn’t feel he deserved a favourite meal. She was upset he wanted to get back to his usual life. In fact, she’d go so far as to say it had distinctly unsettled her. She reached for a tin of chopped tomatoes from the cupboard, then misjudged the worktop which resulted in the can hitting the floor and denting, not once, but twice. This made it difficult to open. Sharon could feel herself getting more and more irritated as she struggled to get the lid off. However, she pressed on and eventually managed to open the can, adding the tomatoes and beans to the mince. Then she hesitated. On the spur of the moment, she fished out five of the beans and placed them in her mortar. She turned up the heat under the pan and gave the chilli a good stir. A few
